171 - What Does the Lord Require

Tune: Sharpthorne

This tune is probably the best-known of Erik Routley's hymns, and deservedly so.  Routley made a great contribution to the development of hymn-singing, and the effect of his work continues to be felt.  With the church's emphasis on social justice, this hymn can be sung at any time of the year, not just Lent.  A strong melody in a minor key, with a little rhythmic kick in that 5/4 measure at the end of the second line.
