587 - Once to Every Man and Nation

Tune: Ebenezer

I have huge theological objections to the text of this hymn.  I don't for a minute believe that the chance to "decide ... for the good or evil side" comes only once, and I don't think it comes only to men.  The choice comes over and over again, and just when you think you've got it all under control, it presents itself again in a new guise.  The second verse, about tracking the bloodied feet of Jesus by the light of burning martyrs, is a revolting image ... I mean, really!!!  It may in some highly metaphysical worldview be conceivable, but … ewwwww.
